"Picture yourself walking into a house and seeing a bruised, bleeding, swollen and black eyed women. She's sitting on the couch, furtively glancing at the only other person in the room, a man who's smiling and offering his hand to you. You ask the women if she's ok. She nods. You ask how she got hurt. She glances at the man and then quickly looks down and mumbles, " I fell down". Out of the corner of your eye you spot a little girl peeking from the hallway. You know beyond a shadow of any doubt she's lying. You know that the smiling man beat her. You also know there is nothing you can do but take a report and walk away. You're a cop on a domestic abuse call. You are sworn to protect and serve. In your mind you realize you accomplished neither of these as you walk away. How long does it take before you become numb ?

I want to encourage you to do something I've been doing for about 6 months now. Thank any policeman you can. Don't interrupt anything they are doing, if you have the time hang around a minute or two to see if you can get an opportunity. Do it quietly and discreetly. Don't get into a long conversation. Simply offer your hand and say "I want to thank you for your service to our community". It takes no effort and may just provide the encouragement and motivation some public servant needs to get past the bad and ugly stuff that the job entails."
